KARUMBA, GULF OF CARPENTARIA |
|
Situated on the mouth of the Norman River which flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria and is the centre of the Gulf's prawn and barramundi industries. Karumba is at the end of the Matilda Highway and is aptly named "The Outback By The Sea". Karumba is serviced by a bitumen road from both the east and south so access is not difficult during either the winter months or the monsoon season, before travelling over the wet it is advisable to check the road conditions Travellers who have been just about everywhere in Australia will tell you there's nowhere with quite the same atmosphere as Karumba in winter, where the sun shines everyday. If you're looking for a real fishing adventure or would like to just relax and enjoy the atmosphere of a lovely town and friendly people. It is a must that you spend some if not all of your holidays in Karumba. Enjoy the experience of a lifetime that will keep you returning year after year. We have the only stretch of beach in the central Savannah that can be accessed by road. Anyone who has been on the beach at sunset knows it's a memorable experience. Our waterways are alive with marine and bird life, a fishing trip in your own tinnie or with a Charter Operator could see you landing a variety of species including King Salmon, Grunter or even the elusive Barramundi. A relaxing trip down the river with our local cruise operators could have you coming face to face with a crocodile, or watching the abundance of birdlife nesting in amongst the mangroves. During October to March is when the wetlands and saltflats come alive with an abundance of birdlife which is a must to see, species include Wader birds, Broglas and Jabarus and countless others.
